Linda Edna Cardellini's parents include businessman Wayne David Cardellini and Lorraine (Hernan). Her parents were born in Redwood City in California. She is Italian (from a paternal grandson), Irish (from a mother), German and English. Linda is a native of San Francisco Bay and grew to become the smallest of four kids. She became interested in acting as a ten year old, after she sang in a Christmas production at school. Her school productions included plays and in local theatres. She began her career as an actress in British actor in Just William (2010), which was a British series on British television. After her success as Lady Rose MacClare on the period drama Downton Abbey from 2012-2015, her first breakthrough role was on the film of the same name, Cinderella in the year 2015. James went on to portray the Countess Natasha Rostova in the television version of War & Peace (2016) as well as starring in various movies, including the action-packed film Baby Driver (2017), the period dramas Darkest Hour (2017), The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018) as well as The Dig (2021), and musicals Mamma Mia! We're Going Again (2019) as well as Yesterday (2018). Her performance as Pamela Anderson in the biographical series Pam & Tommy (2022) received nominations for a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy Award.
