Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) She was raised by her mother, her grandmother as well as her godparents. Her father abandoned her family. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder based on words as a young teenager. Ford began to be fascinated by acting when she was a teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she concluded that this school wasn't for her. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth application she was admitted. Her classmate was Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut, appearing as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in the year 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate was on television in the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. She worked on stage regularly as well as a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate started to get noticed because of her stand-up comedic performances in 1996.
