
Melissa Crystal O'Neil (born July 12, 1988[1]) is a Canadian performer and actress. In 2005, O'Neil won the third season of Canadian Idol, the first Canadian female to win. As an actress, she is most well-known for her role as Two as Rebecca / Portia Lin on the Syfy science fiction show Dark Matter and as Officer Lucy Chen on the ABC police procedural drama series The Rookie.Although she was greatly praised by the judges, she was a victim of massive setbacks both in the Top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals as she was voted in the bottom three and bottom two as well as the bottom two. Disappointed, the judges encouraged viewers to vote for contestants like Melissa who had the highest vocal ability. O'Neil's performance was consistently praised and O'Neil was not relegated to the bottom three. Zack Werner, the judge, declared O'Neil "a chance to win everything". On September 7, 2005 O'Neil made it to the final two of the competition, along with Rex Goudie. After some more impressive performances and performances, judge Werner famously said that the headlines of the next day's newspapers would be "The King, Kalan Porter is dead, long live the Queen." O'Neil defeated Goudie during the grand finale results ceremony on September 14, 2005 to win the title of Canada's third Idol.
